Character Interview: Florence from The Alchemists of Loom by Elise Kova

Hey guys! Right now, there is a read-along going on for The Alchemists of Loom, the first book in The Loom Saga by Elise Kova, prior to the second book, The Dragons of Nova, releasing in July, and throughout, there will be bonus content and interviews, both character and author, posted on different blogs. Today, I have the honour of posting a Character Interview with Florence. The read-along started May 8th, and will go on until May 31st. The read-along is going on on Facebook, and if you want to join, just follow this link.

The Interview
Tell us three things no one knows about you.

Sometimes I wear fedoras instead of top hats.
I prefer traditional gunpowder and chemical weapons over magic ones.
I have only ever been in two Territories -- Four and Five.

We all know there are a lot of things that are hard on Loom, that it’s far from perfect, but what is something you like about Loom?

There’s always something new being developed! The Alchemists are always finding new medicines, developing new chemicals… The Rivets constantly put out new machines and tools… And you never know what the Harvesters will dig up. Every guild is very passionate about what they believe and what their guild specializes in… Well, almost everyone… People who love their guilds are, at least...

Knowing how much Arianna hates dragons, what was your first thought when you found out she was bringing one home?

It’s better not to question Arianna. It’s like questioning an oncoming train. Maybe you’ll get an answer, maybe you won’t, but either way won’t change the fact that you’re about to be flattened like a pancake.

I was curious about why, her reasons… But I trust Arianna with my life. I knew she had a good reason to do it.

Leaving your guild and going against everything that was expected of you can’t have been an easy choice. Why did you decide to risk it?

I would have died if I hadn’t… In the old days of Loom, people learned a bit from every guild on Ter.0 and then decided on what guild they were pulled to for further study. The Dragons changed all that. They said it was easier, more orderly, to keep track of us all if we were born in a single guild. But, naturally, some of us aren’t born in the right place and we “become a drain” on society. If we fail our progression tests, we’re put to death. I knew I would fail… Honestly, I was miserable and dead either way, it was an easy decision.
Title: The Alchemists of Loom
Author: Elise Kova
My rating: 5 hearts
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Steampunk
Pub. date: January 10th 2017
Publisher: Keymaster Press
Synopsis: Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom. (synopsis from Goodreads)
Elise Kova has always had a profound love of fantastical worlds. Somehow, she managed to focus on the real world long enough to graduate with a Master's in Business Administration before crawling back under her favorite writing blanket to conceptualize her next magic system. She currently lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, and when she is not writing can be found playing video games, watching anime, or talking with readers on social media.
